Sadly another murder in Kings Cross - seems like an isolated stabbing outside the Thornhill Arms on the Caledonian Road, with someone arrested. Will update if we get any more. If anyone has anything useful to share please call Crimestoppers (below). Despite recent murders I don't feel that Kings cross is any more unsafe than it has been - what do others think?
UPDATE - since I posted this at about 133o, Paul convery has put an update with intelligence about a local gang over on his Cally councillors blog. When I spoke to the police today (twice) they gave no indication that this was anything other than a dispute around a pub.
FURTHER UPDATE from the police received 1740
We await formal identification, however we are satisfied the deceased is Samuel Fitzgerald, 20 of the N1 area. A post-mortem examination will take place at St Pancras Mortuary tomorrow, Friday 16 April. An incident room has opened under DCI John Sandlin.
DCI Sandlin said: "Mr Fitzgerald had been drinking inside the Thornhill Arms pub shortly before he was attacked. He had stepped outside the venue, when he became involved in an altercation with at least one man, resulting in him being fatally wounded.
"I appeal to anyone who has information, or was in the area at the time of the attack who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact us- this includes anyone inside the Thornhill Arms pub who has not yet spoken to police, or anyone in the area of nearby Caledonian Road, including the Canal 125 Bar which is close to the scene of the attack ."

Police were called at 20:07hrs on Wednesday, 14 April, to a man stabbed in the street outside the Thornhill Arms pub in Wynford Road, N1. Officers and London Ambulance Service attended to find a 20-year-old man suffering a stab wound to the torso.
He was taken to the Royal London Hospital where he died shortly after arrival. We believe we know the identity of the deceased, but await formal identification and confirmation that next of kin have been informed. A post-mortem examination is yet to be arranged. Officers from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command are investigating.
Anyone with information that may assist police should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. At this early stage, officers retain an open mind as to any motive. A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He has been taken to a north London police station where he remains in custody.
This bar on the Caledonian Road has been making a lot of noise and disturbing residents - it isn't licenced properly. Pappeo's has neither planning permission nor a permanent alcohol licence to be a bar and club. Pappeo's is now applying for a permanent alcohol and entertainment licence to provide music, films, dancing etc until midnight Monday to Thursday, until five the following morning on Friday and Saturday nights and until midnight on Sunday.
One neighbour who contacted this site says:
'...the area is a lot noisier late at night at the weekends. This is very annoying especially considering that the premises do not even have a proper license yet, imagine what it will be like if they were legally able to open all night. I am no killjoy and have no problem with a bar opening regular hours, but being open in a residential area until 5am is a joke.'
Paul Convery has covered the issue over on his councillor site and is driving the council to enforcement action. Yesterday the Islington Council Returning Officer published a list of candidates for the May 6 council elections in Islington. There is some legalese around it but this is basically the list you will see on the ballot paper for Caledonain Ward. Will publish other local wards later. This scrap of land off Frederica Street and Bunning Way opposite Pentonville Prison used to be an awful dump. Grass and mud, covered in rubbish. I hadn't been up there for ages but was delighted to see the extensive make over and some Spring bulbs emerging.

For all the talk of regeneration in Kings Cross its salutary to see set out clearly just how deprived some parts of the area are.
This graphic was generated by the Office for National Statistics when i entered the post code of my old flat on Rufford Street - N1 0AP - go to the link and have a go.
What i find most salutary is that 110 years ago the area in about the same in relative terms. Charles Booth classified the streets there as:
'Lowest class. Vicious. Semi-criminal.' and 'Very poor, casual
chronic want'.
I have put a copy of the map extract from the LSE in below. Charles Booth's remarkable social map of London has been put online by LSE and can be searched by modern post code. Have a go it's fascinating.
You might think that the area doesn't need another kebab shop but sadly the old Sunrise Cafe at 95 Caledonian Road is turninginto Sky Fried Chicken and Kebab. (Declaration - i own a property a few doors away from here.) It isn't clear whether the new owners need planning permission for a change of use from a cafe to a takeaway restaurant.
Whatever the use class issue, the shop sign is wrong for a conservation area. 95 Cally Road is at the end of a relatively intact C19th terrace that remains as laid out when the Cally Road was driven North in the 1820s. The cheap and nasty signs are out of keeping. Cllr Convery is on the case with planning officers.
This site cafe was the scene of a nasty accident in 2006 when a large lorry embedded itself in the shop front - mercifully no one was hurt. You can see a remarkable picture on the Gazette site.
